Technical Guide

Here we will walk you through the steps of getting started on ChatGPT and guide you through the process. 

Getting Started

Creating an account

1. Go to chatgpt.com

2. In the right corner of the screen, next to a black "Log In" button there is a white "Sign Up" button. Click on it.

3. After clicking on it, you will be taken to a page where you can input your email, and create a password.

Starting a new session

1. When going to the ChatGPT website, you will automatically be shown to a new session. You can input your desired prompts here.

2. If you want to go to a previous session, look on the left hand side of the screen. Here, you will see past sessions, which you can then click on to continue asking similar questions on the topic.

3. If you want to start a new session, on the top left corner you will see an icon of a pencil within a square, when hovered over it will say "new chat" and you can use this to start a new session.

Inputting prompts

1. When entering on to chatgpt.com, you will automatically be routed to ask ChatGPT anything.

2. This landing page starts will always start a new session, where you can ask or input any prompt.

3. You can choose to edit your prompt if desired, by clicking the pencil icon on the right corner underneath your prompt, shown when you hover your mouse over it. 

4. To the left of the pencil icon is also an option to copy your prompt if necessary (the two overlapping squares icon).

Troubleshooting

Using any kind of technical application can be difficult! Here we provide a guide to troubleshooting if you run into any mishaps.

If ChatGPT isn’t responding...

Refresh the page (press the circle arrow at the top of your browser) or close and reopen your browser.

If it’s slow or “thinking” too long...

Wait a few seconds. If nothing happens, refresh the page or come back later—it might be busy.

If ChatGPT says it can’t do something...

Try asking the same question in a different way—simpler or more direct.

If it doesn’t understand your image or file...

Make sure you’re using the Plus plan, and that the file is clear and easy to read. You can also try typing your question instead.

ChatGPT Plans

ChatGPT offers various plans with different pricing and features. You can pick one according to your needs.

  • Access to the GPT-4o model (same brain as the paid version)

  • You may run into limits if you use it too much in one day

  • Doesn’t include extra tools or priority speed

  • ​Best for:
    People who use ChatGPT occasionally for simple questions, writing, recipes, or fun.

  • Full access to GPT-4o without daily usage limits

  • Access to smarter features like image understanding and longer conversations

  • Memory: It can remember facts you share and help you over time

  • Best for:
    People who use ChatGPT regularly and want the best experience without limits.

Pro

  • All the features of Plus, plus:

    • Advanced tools (coding, chart creation, file analysis)

    • Uploading documents like PDFs or spreadsheets for ChatGPT to read

    • Bigger context: It can handle much longer projects or tasks

  • Best for:
    Tech-savvy users or businesses that want to use ChatGPT as a work assistant.
